Care About Our Earth, The Natural World, That Which Sustains Us, The One The World’s Children Will Live On, That Which We Are Reliant On For A Future ? Care About The Future of All Species ?
To those that understand the importance of acknowledgement and action on this, the most important issue that we will ever face, it is up to you. Environmental Issues Are Your Responsibility Now More Than Ever !
We now have to accept the reality of the feared future. A period of time that will attempt to diminish and roll back what has been accomplished in attempted fulfillment of the instant self-gratification that is dangled before them and generates the type of thinking that could allow this. The achievements that have been made, important changes that we must fight to preserve and build on are worth the fight. No matter how small the contribution, every one counts but now more than ever it needs to become a maximum effort for all that know how important it is.
Stay Strong ! Don’t Give Up ! It’s Our Future ! Express Your Conviction ! It’s the most important fight you will ever have. Put the Anger, Fear, and Sadness We Are All Feeling Into Action ! It’s The Only Chance and Choice We Have !
Show the world that our majority is intelligent and dedicated to doing what we can for the greater good. No Matter How Difficult the Challenge and The Fight Will Be. And Though the Shocking Division of Priority has been Revealed, Show We Can Overcome !
Care about our Earth, its What Sustains Us ! Support and Fight to Promote Clean Energy, Clean Water, Clean Agricultural Practice. Protect Our Earth, its Soil, its Birds and Bees and Trees, its currently Protected Areas, its Beauty, its Animals, and Us ! And Most Importantly, Live Your Life Clean ! Please !
The Christmas Season is over, the New Year has come, and optimism “even though” shines through, thus we want to share some innovating technology, some thoughts on the past year and some thoughts of the future.
Declared by the 68th UN General Assembly, 2015 was the International Year of Soils. It’s intent; to promote education of the importance of soil for the survival of the earth and us. The key messages from the FAO, the Food & Agriculture Organization campaign include: Healthy soils are the basis of healthy food production; Soils are the foundation for vegetation which is cultivated and managed for feed, fibre, fuel and medicinal products; Soil supports our bio-diversity and they host a quarter of the total; Soils help to combat and adapt to climate change by playing a key role in the carbon cycle; Soils store and filter water by playing a key role in the carbon cycle; and last but most important – Soil is a Non Renewable Resource it’s preservation is essential for food security and our sustainable future. To learn more about what was done this past year with events continuing into 2016 across the world, please visit http://www.fao.org/soils-2015/news/en/. This is an important educational process that must continue so please keep up the discussions.
A study from Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures showed that in the last 40 years we have eaten through 33% of the earths topsoil, exponentially thinking this is a frightening thought. Development and harmful agricultural practices are the main causes. Topsoil is one of the most important pieces for the survival of every eco-system. Fertile soil takes thousands of years to develop and contains billions of beneficial micro-organisms. The American Farmland Trust states that we lose nearly 50 acres of farmland an hour to development, this is land gone forever, land that will never provide sustenance to us or the earth. Harmful agricultural practices are dong long term damage to soil from the use of chemicals from pesticides, to hormones to antibiotics and on– please, please support organic farms. Trees are anchors for the soil and their removal by the clear cutting of our forests, taking everything that can possibly be used, leaving nothing behind for regeneration of any kind has irreparable consequences and leaves a future for our children that is thoughtless in what we have done. Please support and promote sustainable forest management. To learn more visit http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/work/forestry, as well as many other great informational sites on this topic.
Hooray to the Ban on Micro-beads ! President Obama signed into law the Micro-Free Waters Act of 2015 years. This ban is a really great thing and we do applaud this action. Here’s why. Micro-beads are plastic microspheres, found in multitudes of products; cosmetics, personal care products such as toothpaste, soaps, exfoliating agents etc. They are made out of polyethylene most frequently, but can be made of petrochemical plastics like polypropylene or polystyrene. These micro-beads are washed down the drain and go into the water supply. Water treatment facilities are not equipped to remove these particles which do not break down. Once in the water supply, from brook to ocean, these particles sit, have been shown to be excellent collectors of other chemical pollutants and then are inadvertently eaten by the fish that you someday may eat. The law states that by mid-2017 production is banned with a phase out in sales over the next two years. Not quick enough and frankly why ? We know the damage this is doing and how quickly it is happening. What are we truly protecting first and foremost ? Not the first harmful product that has had these slow phase outs, Teflon anyone and many more. We’re just sayin …
Forbes recently published a good article about this topic which explains how to find products with micro-beads in your home, how to return them if you choose, alternatives and more. To view: http://www.forbes.com/sites/carmendrahl/2016/01/09/what-you-need-to-know-about-microbeads-the-banned-bath-product-ingredients/.
A new product though not new technology just more refined that we found to be really cool, is called the Seabin. Developed by a Marine Tech Company in Australia, designed by Pete Ceglinski who teamed up with boat builder Andrew Turon, developing this revolutionary compact way to clean up local waterways. Made from recycled plastic it is a bin that is hooked up to a water pump, trash gets sucked in, is caught in a natural fiber bag, the water goes right through being returned to the waterway. The bag is pulled out when full, the material collected can be sorted for recyclables and the rest disposed of properly. Though not a new alternative for waterway waste management, its smaller design and affordability is great for use at marinas and who knows this may assist in large scale clean waterway technology in the future.
Another innovating idea again not new but becoming more refined is the use of different brines mixed with rock salt in de-icing the roads. Specifically beet juice brine though other brines like pickle brine, or potato brines have been used. The beet juice brine mixed with the sodium chloride, or more commonly rock salt which is extremely bad for our environment, reduces the usage of this heavy salt and as well increases its melting capabilities to a lower temperature. In Canada this year they are trying a white beet brine to eliminate discoloration issues, aesthetic issues that came from the purple beets. Again this is the kind of action and thinking we like to see being explored.
We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and that you look forward to 2016 as we do. Our New Year’s resolutions along with our personal resolutions, involve this web site, living more naturally and spreading the word. We hope that you ride along with us this next year which we know will prove to bring enlightenment of many things to many. We hope to be a small part of it. Live Green and Remember What Is Truly Important.

Welcome to The Organic Odyssey - A Blog For Lively Discussion About Organics and Natural Living !
10/27/2015
Welcome to The Organic Odyssey, the Blog Site of My Organic Access, llc. Here we will strive to bring the latest and greatest in organic and natural living news of all types. We encourage comments and look forward to discussing and learning from each other. That’s what it’s all about, furthering education and understanding, for us and for you if you choose to occasionally ride along. The quest for knowledge for the future ! The quest for ways to promote healthier living ! The quest for an educated world filled with understanding and action. We want to hear from you !
Our journey into organics and living a more natural thus healthier lifestyle began simply, as with many others, with concerns for the environment as well as health issues that clearly were astoundingly better with the improvement of our environment, in our food and in our surroundings and practices. The more we researched the more passionate about a more natural lifestyle we had to become. Chemical and in particular pesticide usage alarmed and alarms us. The waste generated and its disposal consumed and consumes us. Plastic debris both land, marine, and in us, disturbs us. Exceeding our resources astounds and frankly scares us. In our future blogs we will give data and information and opinion, hopefully prompting lively discussion about these and many other issues. We hope you join us !
We’ve experienced first-hand, from living a diverse life, the effects of industrial pollutants, agricultural pollutants, pollution of our land and our ocean’s, lakes and rivers. Old enough to have experienced the drastic changes to the precious environment we have been given to care for in exchange for life, we know that we need to do our part to change the path we’re currently on, for ourselves today and tomorrow, for the earth today and tomorrow, for our children today and tomorrow. We want and need to make it more convenient, more economical, and with quality, for others to do the same.
We need to protect what is left now for the future. We hope it is not too late!
Of course comes great interest in the psychology behind why, when it is so clear that the effects of small changes by the majority are so great, that more aren’t behind, “going green”, or “living more naturally”, or “living sustainably” , or however you wish to refer to it, we like to refer to it simply as “living conscionably”. So why the lack of collective concern and action to what we know to be issues so damaging? But issues that are worthy of and that we can make changes for, changes that will shape the future, make a better future ! We want to hear from you ! Tell us what you think !
What are the benefits of living a more natural, green lifestyle and why is there hesitation in doing this ??? These are things we will explore, and more, in future blogs. In the meantime:
Just a Few Reasons to do it and simple things to do to live more naturally !
“Go Green” or just “Live Conscionably”
1. Choose Organic Foods and Products whenever possible, reduce pesticide use, and improve the health of he earth and us all. Why? The health effects of chronic long term exposure of pesticides to humans, and its effects on the environment and all those supported by it !!! Choosing organic vegetables is healthier for the earth, for the health of all and especially our children and theirs. And by choosing organic it increases the need for more organics in our stores (always answered by capitalism) prompting better selection. And higher volume means better pricing.
2. Choose organic cotton or other organic and natural fibers in our clothing choices (hemp, bamboo..), an immense health savings to the environment. Did you know that cotton is considered the world’s dirtiest crop? In future posts we’ll discuss the heavy use of some nasty pesticides and insecticides used in the growing of conventional cotton and discuss chemical use in our agricultural practice in general. Supporting organic farming, organic food farmers, organic cotton growers, growers of bamboo and hemp, reduces pesticide and insecticide usage. Green products are without question just more humane.
3. Reduce your use of plastics. A few plastic facts:
Easy things you can do to help reduce the use of plastics.
For more facts about plastics and ways to help reduce it please visit: http://ecowatch.com/2014/04/07/22-facts-plastic-pollution-10-things-can-do-about-it/
4. Reduce consumption ! It saves energy and reduces waste. Take care of what you have to help reduce consumption. Yes it might take a little more work but so worth it in the long run. It reduces the energy needed to produce a new product and reduces the packaging surrounding those products so less waste goes into our landfills.
5. Be aware of product packaging. With enough people refusing to purchase products with excessive packaging maybe we can hit the wallet of manufacturer’s who will make conscionable changes.
6. Re-use whenever you can and donate things you no longer need that can be re-used. Reduce waste and avoid a new product purchase,
7. Purchase green cleaning products. Why damage the environment if you don’t have to. Green products have become much more available and affordable, and are healthier for your family.
8. Learn about the things that are going into your body and your environment and talk about it with others. With knowledge comes action and responsibility.
We look forward to hearing from you ! Looking out over mountains, viewing wildlife that we are incredibly lucky to be able to experience and don't believe many more generations will, the need to promote action is great. If information from this blog inspires just one it is worth it but we do hope to inspire many more.
We started the myorganicaccess.com web site to pull together great quality, economical, organic and all natural products on one convenient web site, a one-stop for all your organic needs, for convenience, removing a possible inhibitor of “Living Conscionably”. We are continuing to populate our site with products that will fulfill yours and your family’s organic needs and best of all products for better health and for a healthier earth. It has been and continues to be a challenging endeavor, exciting and enlightening, an absorbing passion. The Organic Odyssey blog will introduce you to up-to date information about organics, living naturally, and the reasons why this is important. At times the blog will include info about products sold on other sites and on ours. We are all in it together and the goal is to promote healthy action, not sales. We strive to share information first and foremost.

3. Reduce your use of plastics. A few plastic facts:
- “93% of Americans age six or over test positive for the plastic chemical BPA. (center for disease (control) Plastic chemicals like BPA are absorbed into the body and though the effects are not yet completely known with opinions being extremely controversial, how much foreign stuff do you want floating around in your body.
- In the last decade we have produced more plastic than the whole last century.
- 50% of the plastic used is used just once and thrown away.
- The average American throws away appx. 185 lbs. of plastic per year.
- Plastic accounts for appx. 10% of the waste we generate.
- We currently recover only 5% of the plastic produced.
Easy things you can do to help reduce the use of plastics.
- Find alternatives to your current plastic use – we all know the things to do, use cloth bags instead of plastic, paper bags for trash, use reusable mugs/cups, refuse excessive packaging (single serve water bottles etc., use re-usable sandwich keepers or wax paper instead of plastic wrap, seek alternative diaper choices, and on).
- If you must buy plastics, try to purchase BPA Free.
- If you must buy plastics, try to buy PET 1 or 2.
- Always recycle.
